- Small Baluchi Rug [more]
- Item #689
- Age: Late 19th C.
- Country: N.E. Persia
- Size: 32" x 63"
- Price: On request
- Sweet little Baluchi rug from the late 19th C. Diagonal octagon bands of deep blue alternating with red-brown fill the field and create a rhythmic movement from one end to the other. Memling guls are contained in each of the octagons, and small floral forms appear where each of the octagons meet. The meandering floral border with ivory flowers and the outer reciprocal minor border create a wonderful contrast to the richly colored field and produce a "cheery" quality not often seen Baluchis. The lustrous wool makes the rug appear to glow. Other than the slightly corroded brown, the rug is in full pile. A certain amount of fading has occurred on the face, but the effect has actually enhanced the appearance of the rug. The photos display the rug from either end, the contrast being quite remarkable! SOLD!

- Kagizman Kurdish Saddle Bags [more]
- Item #680
- Age: Late 19th C.
- Country: E. Anatolia
- Size: 1'10" x 3'8"
- Price: On request
- A rare, pristine complete pair of saddle bags woven in the weftless sumak technique. These bags with natural dyes were clearly woven for a girl's dowry. Based on their immaculate condition, it is clear that they were never used, and would have been saved as a family heirloom. The weftless sumak technique is unusual and consists of rows of weft wrapping without an intervening ground weft. Marla Mallett in her excellent book, Woven Structures, states that this technique is almost exclusively found in Kurdish saddle bags from eastern Anatolia. It is said to be one of the most ancient weaving techniques that "...predate the invention of shedding devices." SOLD

- Item #R2
- Age: Circa 1900
- Country: SW Persia
- Size: 2' x 2'2"
- Price: On request
- Concentric hooked diamonds that appear to suggest animal heads along the edges form an incredibly powerful center medallion. The four corners contain endless knot designs, and the remainder of the field encloses a panoply of small motifs. Wow! This highly skilled weaver knew how to capture your attention. The interplay between figure and ground is remarkable. The wool quality and deep rich colors are also outstanding and contribute to the overall beauty and energy of the piece. SOLD

- Age: 2nd half 19th C.
- Country: Turkey
- Size: 65" x 92"

- Item #
- Age: Late 19th C.
- Country: Kirgyzstan
- Size: 39" x 42" 90 x 107 cm.
- Price: $450.00
- This remarkable textile may have functioned as a Kirghiz dowry piece to be used during a wedding ceremony (I owe this information to Elmira Gyul of the Fine Arts Institute of Academy of Sciences of Republic of Uzbekistan). It is composed of various textile fragments in wool, silk and cotton employing a large array of needle and weaving techniques. The colors appear to be from natural sources. The central design elements are worked in metal wrapped thread. This is a rare, powerful and beautiful Central Asian artifact.

- Ladik Prayer Rug [more]
- Item #591
- Age: 1st Qtr. 19th C.
- Country: Turkey
- Size: 3'5" x 5'4"
- Price: On request
- An early Ladik prayer rug., circa 1800, with an unusual treatment of the mihrab. The customary stepped sides of the arch have been simplified and rise diagonally towards the top. For a similar example, see Sotheby's Carpets catalog, New York 11 June 2008, lot #5. There is a lovely soft color palette in addition to the rich central "Turkey red" consistent with rugs of this age and type. Capturing them in a photo is a challenge. Obvious old repairs, it remains a glorious testament to the refined taste of Ottoman culture. SOLD

- Item #
- Age: Circa 1900
- Country: Persia
- Size: 3'6" x 4'10"
- Price: $1050.00
- Some would identify this rug as a "Mahajoran" Saruk based on the indigo field and open spacing of the floral elements. Others have called it a "Fereghan Saruk" due to the structure. Whatever the name, this is a sweet small city rug with remarkably high pile and a very pleasant design. There is some minor loss at either end. SOLD

- Kurd Bag Face [more]
- Item #186
- Age: Late 19th C.
- Country: Kurdistan
- Size: 2' x1'7"
- Price: $450.00
- This Kurdish bag face is a fine example of the positive effects of corrosion of the background brown wool in oriental rugs and bags. The oxidized approximately 2/3 of the field sets the floral design above the ground in a 3 dimensional perspective. The effect is quite intriguing especially as it contrasts with the deep indigo field color below. The soft color palette enhanced by the gold border creates a very pleasing autumnal feeling. (The photo fails to adequately translate the effect of the corrosion). SOLD

- Item #607
- Age: 2nd half 19th C.
- Country: Persia
- Size: 2'6" x 2'9"
- Price: On request
- An outstanding Baluchi bagface with amazing colors and wool quality. Rare to see this design with such long silky pile and vibrantly rich colors. This piece is near identical to plate 35 in "Baluchi Woven Treasures," Col. Boucher's superlative book on Baluchi weaving. He remarks on the significance of the electric blue used in the central field and octagon star borders. Unlike his there isn't the magenta silk, but also unlike his, the sumak border remains very much intact. SOLD

- Item #537
- Age: 19th C.
- Country: NW Persia
- Size: 4'5" x 7'3"
- Price: $2500.00
- For me, the large scale of the Herati pattern in the field of this kilim is much more powerful and interesting than those exhibiting a reduced version of the design. The colors here are rich and beautifully balanced. While fineness matters, and this one is certainly fine enough, the strong character and color of this piece trump most of the type.

- Josan Souf Rug [more]
- Item #151
- Age: Late 19th C. or early 20th C.
- Country: Persia
- Size: 3'5" x 5'
- Price: On request
- Not really a new acquisition, I've owned this rug for many years but haven't chosen to offer it for sale before. Rugs employing the "souf" technique have a 3 dimensional quality as the background is intentionally cut shorter than the foreground elements creating a bas relief effect. Pieces of this quality were reserved for use when an "honored guest" visited a family. The guest would be offered the rug as a place to sit signifying their elevated status. I'm unable to take satisfactory pictures of the piece but can assure you that it's a remarkably beautiful artefact of 19th C. Persia. SOLD
